Sunrise over Mount Bromo and the volcanic craters of East Java

Java–Bali Overland Tour

Real People. Real Stories. Authentic Java.

Cross Java the slow way — by road, with a private car and an English-speaking driver, stopping for temples, volcanoes and crater lakes on your way to Bali. Or start in Bali and travel the other way round.

Private only — your group, your pace Either direction — Jakarta → Bali, Bali → Jakarta, or custom Duration — set by your start and finish dates Replies — usually the same day

Which way are you travelling?

Three ways to cross the island

Most guests fly into one end of the route and out of the other, so no day is wasted backtracking. If your plans start or end somewhere in between, that works too.

Jakarta → Bali

The classic direction. Land in Jakarta, travel east through Yogyakarta, Bromo and Ijen, then cross by ferry to Bali and finish at the beach.

Bali → Jakarta

The same road in reverse. Start with a few days in Bali, cross to Java for Ijen and Bromo, linger in Yogyakarta, and finish in Jakarta for your flight home.

Custom start & finish

Starting in Yogyakarta, Surabaya, or another city? Ending somewhere else entirely? Tell us your start and finish cities in the form below and we build the route around them.

Along the way

The stops that make the journey

An overland trip is built from the same experiences as our Yogyakarta tours, plus the two great volcanoes of East Java. Skip any of them, or stay longer — the route bends around you.

Borobudur Temple, Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta — the heart of the trip

Most overland guests give Yogyakarta the most nights, and for good reason: it is where Java's history lives.

  • Borobudur — sunrise or regular hours, courtyard or temple-climb ticket
  • Prambanan — beautiful any time, unforgettable at sunset
  • Merapi Jeep — an open-top 4×4 ride across the volcano's lava fields
  • Food tours, the Kraton and Taman Sari, workshops and Gunung Kidul can all join the stay — see our Custom Yogyakarta Package for the full menu

Good to know: a local guide at the temple is mandatory for Borobudur, and ticket types differ — we explain the options clearly before you book.

A row of colourful jeeps parked on the Sea of Sand at Mount Bromo, East Java

Mount Bromo — sunrise over the Sea of Sand

Wake before dawn, ride a jeep across the ash plain, and watch the sun rise over Bromo's smoking cone, with Batok beside it and Semeru puffing in the distance.

  • Sunrise viewpoint, then down to the Sea of Sand by jeep
  • Walk up to the crater rim and look into the steaming crater
  • Usually one night in the Bromo area is enough

Good to know: Bromo-only trips are also possible without the full overland route — just ask us on WhatsApp.

Aerial view of the turquoise crater lake of Kawah Ijen, East Java

Kawah Ijen — the turquoise crater lake

At Java's eastern tip, a steep night or early-morning hike leads to the rim of the world's largest acidic crater lake — an unreal turquoise, ringed by sulfur-yellow rock.

  • Night hike for the famous blue fire, or a sunrise hike to the rim
  • Gas mask and a local guide are part of the hike
  • The ferry to Bali is a short drive from the trailhead area

Good to know: Ijen-only trips are also possible without the full overland route — just ask us on WhatsApp.

And then, Bali

The road ends at the Gilimanuk ferry and the west coast of Bali. From there the island is yours — many guests simply finish the drive at their Bali hotel and take it slow.

  • Ferry crossing from Ketapang to Gilimanuk included in the drive plan
  • Drop-off at your hotel in Bali — tell us where you're staying
  • Travelling in reverse? Bali is just as good a place to begin

How it takes shape

One example of the crossing

This is an illustration, not a fixed itinerary — your trip is built from your own start and finish dates, and can be shorter, longer, or fully custom. Most guests take somewhere between 5 and 12 days.

  1. Leg 1
    Arrive & head east

Meet your driver at your start city and hit the road — or take a first day to settle in before the driving begins.

  2. Leg 2
    Yogyakarta days

Two to four nights for Borobudur, Prambanan, Merapi, food and the city itself — the deepest stop on the route.

  3. Leg 3
    Bromo night

Drive east to the Bromo area, sleep early, and rise in the dark for sunrise over the Sea of Sand and the crater walk.

  4. Leg 4
    Ijen hike

On to Banyuwangi for the night or sunrise hike to Ijen's turquoise crater lake.

  5. Leg 5
    Ferry to Bali

A short hop across the strait, then the drive to your Bali hotel — or, in reverse, this is where your Java crossing begins.

Your trip, your way

Transport Only or All-Inclusive?

Every overland trip runs in one of two styles. Many guests start with Transport Only and add just the pieces they want handled for them.

Transport Only

For independent travellers who like booking their own tickets and hotels.

  • Private car with an English-speaking driver for the whole route
  • Fuel, parking, and highway tolls on the overland legs included
  • Pickup at your start city and drop-off at your finish city
  • Your driver points you to good local food stops along the way
  • Entrance tickets and hotels — you arrange these yourself

A local guide is a different role from your driver and can be added separately wherever a day needs one — at Borobudur a temple guide is mandatory.

All-Inclusive

Tell us your budget and wish list — we assemble the whole crossing.

  • Everything in Transport Only
  • Entrance tickets arranged, including Bromo and Ijen and the right Borobudur ticket type
  • Hotel options suggested along the route, to fit your budget
  • Jeeps at Bromo and local guides where they matter booked ahead
  • Ferry crossing planned into the drive

You choose which items go in. Nothing is bundled in that you didn't ask for.

How it works

It starts with your dates

1

Give us your dates

An overland trip is built backwards from your start and finish dates — send them with your direction and group size in the form below.

2

Get a draft & quote

We reply, usually the same day, with a day-by-day route draft and a price in your preferred currency.

3

Adjust & confirm

Add a night in Yogyakarta, drop a stop, slow a drive down. Your booking is official once you confirm in writing.

4

Pay the deposit

50% deposit for All-Inclusive, with the balance on arrival. Multi-day Transport Only asks a 40–50% deposit.

Booking & payment, in short

  • Prices are quoted per trip via WhatsApp, because they depend on your group size, dates, and chosen add-ons — tell us your preferred currency (IDR, USD, EUR, or another) and we quote in it.
  • All-Inclusive: 50% deposit, paid at the latest 7 days before arrival; the balance is paid on arrival / on the tour day.
  • Transport Only: payment on arrival or on the first day. Multi-day trips ask a 40–50% deposit; the rest is due on the last day. A one-day trip can simply be paid at the end of the tour.
  • Cancellation: Transport Only can be cancelled up to 3 days before. For All-Inclusive, if hotels and tickets are not booked yet your deposit is refunded 100%; if they are already booked, those costs are deducted.
  • Weather & closures: if a place is closed, we reschedule. In rain, trips with tickets already booked cannot be rescheduled; if nothing is booked yet, you are refunded 100%.
  • Questions any time: WhatsApp +62 851-8836-8726 or email [email protected].
